Analytics nowadays is different from BI 10 years ago and even more than reporting 20+ years ago. The modern trends have a different impact on your server, and also on the DBA job because users do different things with databases compared to the past. An overview of the impact of the new trends.

RAGs, GAI, LLMs etc are all the rage, but are they any good at answering Database or SQL problems? Would you like to talk to Jonathan Lewis, Tim Hall (oracle-base.com) or other Oracle Experts without actually talking to them? We’ll build and use RAG & LLM using different sources, and explore if it is as good as the Real Thing. In recent times ChatGPT seems to have replaced StackOverflo and Google as sources for answering your Oracle Database questions. ChatGPT is what you can use when you don’t have Jonathan Lewis, Tim Hall or other “well-known experts” at your desk ready to answer your questions. But ChatGPT has proven to be untrustworthy with it giving incorrect answers based on mixed topics and different technologies. It seems to make up answers that sound plausible, and when you try to use it, you realise how good/rubbish it really is. What if you could create a solution to include real knowledge from real experts, and chat with it? A bit like talking to them in person. All it takes is an Oracle Database with the new Vector Search feature, some Cloud AI Services and you are ready to ask your questions. Join us in this journey in building your own JonathanGPT, OracleBaseGPT, or both, and many more all together into your own customer Oracle Database ChatGPT-like solution!

The next trend (hype?) is : Distributed, Clustered, Serveless, Sharded, Replicated, Databases. That is a lot of buzzwords together, and I have omitted “multi-cloud”, “raft”, “ai” and “vector”. We’ll try to find out how various vendors interpret those (buzz)words and how/when these are useful. And We’ll explore what users, administrators and application-programmers can expect when data is stored in a distributed database, including some of the mistakes we made. And then, when your boss tells you to “Use This New Gizmo!”, then maybe you know what to watch out for.

I tend to work in a few companies each year. Something I have been getting asked more and more, other than “make it faster”, it how to secure the Oracle database – frequently because of a failed audit. In companies and governments, I see; poor auditing, no security consideration, no lockdown of accounts, inadequate processes, and lots of risk. There are some easy and straightforward changes which you can make to your Oracle database which will make it more secure, harder to exploit and, in the unfortunate even of a data breach, give you a chance of noticing what happened! I will talk through the changes you can make and explain why they should be made, and the effort involved.

Exadatas are amazing machines. They have some extraordinary capabilities. And they are quite expensive. I mean, really quite expensive. And we need to re-buy them every few years as they age. A client came along one day and asked me “what can we do to cut the bills?” I said “Nothing. Pay the money.” And they said “We don’t want to! Can’t we do something cheaper?”. “erm” “Look, can you get us off those f*cking Exadata machines?” This is a short story explaining if I could.

Upgrading a database with plattform migration is always challenging especially if you should hav a very short downtime. There are many ways to do this. In a recent project I used Transportable Tablespace for that. I’ll show how I did this and what could go wrong. There are many ways for updating/migrating a database. This could be datapump/goldengate/autoupgrade and so on.Each of this ways does have some pros and cons.Recently I had to upgrade an >1TB 11gR2 database on Windows to a 19cRU14 database on an ODA.The problem was that the storage and everything on the windows side was very old and slow and we only had a short maintenance window for this action. Finally we decided to use Transportable Tablespace which provides us the possibility to incremental update the new database and have a short downtime during the maintenance window. In this presentation I’ll show you how you can migrate a database with a short downtime and what possibly could go wrong.

27 years have passed since nQuire came out, became Siebel Analytics, became Oracle Business Intelligence, and is now Oracle Analytics. Let’s spend a fun hour looking at just how bad things are being messed up after almost 3 decades of “know-how”. Is this tongue-in-cheek humour? Absolutely not. Is this blatant honesty and can you learn valuable lessons from other’s failures and mistakes? Most definitely!

Has Italy ever won the Eurovision Song Contest two or more years in a row? As we’ll see, this can be answered easily using SQL Pattern Matching. A new clause – MATCH_RECOGNIZE – was added to the SELECT statement in Oracle 12c, to allow recognizing patterns in sequences of rows. This new capability is very powerful, and introduces a completely new (yet somewhat intimidating) syntax. It allows solving a variety of problems in a simpler way than before, and with better performance.

Oracle 23ai introduced an exciting new feature with its AI Vector Search capabilities. We’ll start with the essentials — demystifying the concept of AI Vector Search in the Oracle database. What are vectors, and how can they change our approach to search queries? The presentation progresses to discuss real examples of how to prepare and generate your vectors for embedding in your database. It also covers the new search operators and functions introduced with this feature. Moving beyond basics, we will delve into practical applications. Learn how to embed your vectors, transforming raw data into a searchable landscape. We’ll explore the new search operators and functions that Oracle 23ai brings to the table through real-world examples. We’ll take a look at vector distances and measurement methods. Through illustrative examples, understand how similarity searches can be performed using AI Vector Search. Bringing it all together, we will integrate it with PL/SQL and APEX applications, showcasing the incorporation of AI Vector Search into database environments.

This session covers many features that were added to the Oracle database in the recent releases, and allow us developers to become more efficient and productive. Some features enhance the SQL language, so SQL statements can become much shorter and more readable than before. Other features offer built-in functionality that previously had to be implemented by the application. Attend this session to learn about the new features, and see many useful examples.
